n-Gauge 1 is a highly versatile instrument aimed primarily at laboratory, research and development, and academic environments.  Compact, self-contained and without moving parts, the device is supplied as a stand alone unit for integration into a user-supplied microscope, or in conjunction with a standard optical microscope as an integrated package.  With a choice of microscopes, lenses and motorised sample positioning systems, the tool can support a broad spectrum of metrology requirements and is easily configurable to suit almost any application and customer requirement.

The n-Gauge 1 is exceptionally easy to operate.  To conduct a measurement the user places the sample under test in an appropriate holder before configuring the system via the graphical user interface, either by adjusting a number of variables or selecting one of a number of pre-defined test profiles.  A highly focused laser spot is then positioned on the target area in the centre of the field of view and the reflected laser light automatically analysed to determine the thickness, refractive index, orientation and strain at that location.  The data and result are presented on the graphical user interface or distributed to a remote location via the on-board PLC.

n-eos has optimised its technology and products to accommodate the range of films and coating profiles likely found in modern industrial and non-industrial applications.  As a result two variants of n-Gauge 1 have been developed, each of which is specially configured for measuring and characterising membranes and coatings across a defined range of different sample thicknesses.

  • n-Gauge 1n-Gauge 1 is a straightforward BPR device designed for the measurement and characterisation of medium to thicker thin films ranging between ~1μm and 500μm.
  • n-Gauge 1E: With the addition of Beam Profile Ellipsometry (BPE) capability alongside BPR, n-Gauge 1E is engineered to measure and characterise thinner films ranging between 1nm and 100μm.

n-Gauge 1 System Demonstration: Coronary Stent Measurement

n-eos’ founder and CTO Dr Stephen Morris demonstrates the characterisation of a medical coronary stent using n-Gauge 1.  This sample was chosen as while it presents a significant challenge to many other metrology systems, it provides a superb demonstration of n-Gauge 1’s measurement capabilities and ability to produce data that can be used to improve a product’s physical integrity, manufacturability and in-patient performance.
